How Each Prayer Time Is Defined
Fajr
Fajr begins at true dawn — when the first light appears on the horizon before sunrise — and ends at sunrise itself.
Dhuhr
Dhuhr begins just after the sun passes its highest point, known as solar noon.
Asr
Asr begins when the length of an object's shadow reaches a specific multiple of its height above the shadow length at noon. This is actually one of the few timing calculations where different schools of Islamic jurisprudence use different multipliers, which is why you'll sometimes see two slightly different Asr times listed for the same location.
Maghrib and Isha
Maghrib begins at sunset, and Isha begins once twilight has fully faded and true darkness sets in.
Why Fajr and Isha Are Harder to Calculate
Because Fajr and Isha are defined by the sun's angle below the horizon rather than a fixed clock time, calculating them precisely requires astronomical formulas, not just a sunrise/sunset lookup. Different Islamic authorities have historically settled on slightly different angles for defining true dawn and true night — commonly cited conventions include those associated with the Muslim World League, the University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi, and Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, among others, each specifying a particular solar angle for Fajr and Isha. These differences are usually small — a matter of minutes — but they explain why two prayer time apps can occasionally disagree slightly on when Fajr begins, even for the exact same coordinates.
Why Your Exact Location Matters
Location matters enormously here, and not just at the city level — even a few miles can shift Maghrib or Fajr by a noticeable amount, which is why we calculate timings from your specific coordinates rather than rounding to the nearest major city. Latitude has an outsized effect too: locations far from the equator experience dramatically different day lengths across the year, and at very high latitudes during summer, twilight never fully fades before dawn begins again, which creates genuine calculation challenges that most standard formulas handle with specific high-latitude adjustment rules.
The Built-In Rhythm of Five Daily Pauses
The rhythm these five prayers create is, by design, a built-in structure for the day — a pause roughly every three to four waking hours that interrupts whatever else is happening and redirects attention back to worship. Scholars have written extensively about this as a form of built-in mindfulness training, distinct from most other religious practices in how frequently it repeats. It's a structure that works precisely because it doesn't depend on motivation in the moment — the time arrives whether or not you feel like praying, and that regularity is part of the discipline.

How Prayer Times Interact With Ramadan
Because prayer times shift daily with the sun's position, they interact directly with the Islamic calendar in ways that matter practically — Suhoor and Iftar times during Ramadan are directly tied to Fajr and Maghrib, and as the lunar calendar drifts across the seasons year over year, a Ramadan in summer can mean a noticeably longer fasting window than a Ramadan in winter, sometimes by several hours depending on your latitude. Using the Minutes Around Each Prayer

Madhab Differences in Asr Calculation
The Asr calculation is the clearest example of a genuine, longstanding scholarly difference reflected directly in prayer time tools. The Hanafi school calculates Asr when an object's shadow reaches twice its height (plus the shadow length at noon), while the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools calculate it at one times the object's height. In practice, this means Hanafi Asr typically begins somewhat later than Asr calculated by the other three schools — a genuine difference in juristic reasoning about the relevant Hadith, not a calculation error.
High-Latitude Prayer Time Adjustments
At latitudes above roughly 48 degrees, standard Fajr and Isha calculations based on solar angle can break down entirely during summer months, when the sun never dips far enough below the horizon for true darkness or true dawn to occur by the normal definition. Several adjustment methods exist to handle this — including the Angle-Based Method, the Middle-of-the-Night Method, and the One-Seventh-of-the-Night Method — each offering a different formula for estimating Fajr and Isha when the standard astronomical definition simply doesn't apply. If you live at a high latitude, it's worth knowing which adjustment convention a prayer times tool is using, since the difference between methods can be substantial during summer.
Qibla Direction and Prayer
Alongside timing, correctly facing the Qibla — the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca — is a condition of a valid prayer. The Qibla direction from any given location is calculated using great-circle navigation (the shortest path across the curved surface of the Earth), which is why the correct Qibla direction from, say, New York points roughly northeast rather than simply east, despite Mecca being east and south of New York on a flat map projection.
Traveling and Prayer Times
When traveling, especially across time zones, keeping accurate prayer times becomes more involved, since your location — and therefore your Fajr, Maghrib, and every other prayer time — changes daily. It's worth checking your prayer times fresh for each new city rather than relying on times calculated for your home location, particularly for Fajr and Isha, where even a modest change in latitude can shift the calculation meaningfully.
Missed Prayers and Making Them Up
Islamic jurisprudence provides for Qada — making up a missed obligatory prayer as soon as reasonably possible after remembering it, generally without waiting for the next prayer's designated time. Understanding your prayer schedule accurately isn't just about knowing when a prayer begins; it's also part of knowing, with confidence, whether a given prayer window has genuinely closed or whether there's still time to pray on time.
