Mast Qalandar Vol 14 — Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Qawwali MP3
Mast Qalandar — the intoxicated qalandar — is one of the central figures of the South Asian sufi imagination: the wandering dervish who has abandoned all social convention in the service of complete absorption in divine love. The qalandar does not follow the usual rules because the qalandar has progressed beyond them into a state where those rules no longer apply in the ordinary sense. Lal Shahbaz Qalandar is the most famous manifestation of this tradition in Pakistani culture, but the qalandar as type appears throughout sufi literature across the subcontinent.
The Qalandar and Pakistani Sufi Culture
Most of his qawwalis are in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu, and the mast qalandar material represents one of the core themes of the Punjabi sufi tradition. He has all qawwali in audio video formats that could be played on iRulz without any additional software installed. He is not the only qawwal who sang this qawwali — many others have performed in this tradition — and the various versions reveal different understandings of what the qalandar state means and how it should be performed.
The qawalies of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are filled with sofiyana kalam from the poets of this tradition. Wadali Brothers, Abida Parveen and Jhoole Laal Maizik Tuch represent the qalandar tradition from different angles in the iRulz collection.

FAQ
What is the qalandar tradition in Sufism? A strand of sufi practice associated with complete renunciation of social convention and ego — the malamatiyya or blame-worthy path, in which the sufi deliberately invites social disapproval as a way of eliminating attachment to reputation.
Is the qalandar figure controversial in Islamic scholarship? Yes — the qalandar tradition has been criticized by more legally-oriented Islamic scholars for apparently disregarding sharia obligations. Defenders argue that the apparent transgression is misunderstood and that the qalandar operates at a higher level of the law's inner meaning.
Is Vol 14 different from other volumes in this series? Each volume draws from different recording sessions. The specific tracks are listed on the iRulz album page.
