Wadah Kar Ke Sahjjan Vol 4 — Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Punjabi MP3

Wadah Kar Ke Sahjjan — "having made a promise, beloved" — is a Punjabi sufi qawwali about the divine promise and the devotee's expectation of its fulfillment. The wadah (promise) in sufi theology refers to the divine covenant described in the Quran (7:172), when Allah asked the assembled souls — before they entered the world — whether He was not their Lord, and they affirmed that He was. This pre-existential covenant is the foundation of the devotional relationship: the divine promised to be their Lord; they promised to remember and worship. The qawwali about this promise has been performed by many qawwals across the tradition, and this is Vol 4 of Nusrat's engagement with it.

Covenant and Promise in Sufi Thought

He has participated in and won many qawwali competitions. His best qawwalis are a phenomenal fusion of eastern and western music. Although his qawwali majorly depicts ethnic form, it has earned an international name. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Muazzam and Abida Parveen all engage with the covenant theme from their respective positions in the tradition.

FAQ

What is the alastu covenant in Islamic thought? The primordial covenant (mithaq) described in Quran 7:172, where Allah asked the assembled souls "Am I not your Lord (alastu bi-rabbikum)?" and they replied "Yes (bala)" — affirming divine lordship before entering the world.

Why is this covenant important to sufi practice? Because it means that the devotee's return to divine awareness is not a new beginning but a remembering of what was always already known and promised. The devotional path is the path of remembrance, not of discovery.

Is this from a specific period of his recording career? Vol 4 of this series suggests multiple recording sessions. Check the iRulz album notes for specific dates.
