Khwaja Ki Diwani — Sabri Brothers Chishti Qawwali MP3

Khwaja Ki Diwani — "the one mad with love for the Khwaja" — is diwani from the Arabic for crazy, for the madness that the sufi tradition regards as the highest form of rational state: the state in which the ordinary logic of self-interest has been displaced by the overwhelming fact of divine love. The Sabri Brothers' recording of this devotional composition dedicated to Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is one of the definitive performances of Chishti qawwali in the Pakistani tradition.

The Sabri Brothers and Chishti Tradition

The Sabri Brothers were trained in the Chishti tradition specifically — not simply in qawwali generally but in the specific practice of qawwali as the Chishtis conceived and used it. This training shows in the structural discipline of their ensemble, in the careful attention to the rules of sama, in the way their performances build toward states of devotional absorption rather than toward performance climaxes designed to impress an audience.

They have all qawwali in audio and video formats that could be played on iRulz without any additional software installed. They are one of the classic qawwals of our history, and a high-profiled name regarding qawwali art. Jhoole Laal Maizik Tuch, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Qari Saeed Chishti Qawwal are all available in the iRulz library as comparison points from different angles of the same devotional tradition.

FAQ

What does diwani mean in sufi context? The one who is crazy — in the sufi tradition, one who has been struck by divine love to the point where ordinary social rationality no longer applies. This is treated as a spiritually elevated state rather than a pathological one.

Are the Sabri Brothers still performing? Ghulam Farid Sabri died in 1994. His brother Maqbool Ahmed Sabri passed later. Their son and nephew have continued performing under the Sabri Brothers name.

Is this specifically a Chishti composition or is it performed across traditions? Chishti-honoring qawwali is performed across traditions by qawwals who are not themselves Chishti-trained. The Sabri Brothers brought specific Chishti authority to this material.
